THERE was a home win for the Volk’s Electric Railway (VER) on February 10, as it scooped the top Railway of the Year prize at the Heritage Railway Association’s annual awards ceremony in Brighton.
The VER is a fascinating operation, the oldest operational electric railway in the world, and still uses a fleet of cars dating back to the 1890s. The single-track 2ft 8½in gauge line, powered by third-rail at 110V DC, runs along Brighton seafront for just over a mile from Aquarium station (near the Palace Pier) in the west to Black Rock station (near the marina) in the east.
