The weavers of Taunton
Taunton’s transformation into a paradise for spin bowlers has elicited strong reactions. There have been howls of protest from supporters at rival counties who feel it gives Somerset an undue advantage to play on result pitches. But plenty of other cricket fans are just happy to see more spin being bowled.
If things go well, the long-term legacy could end up being a few more decent spinners… and a generation of twinkletoed batsmen proficient against them.
Somerset only felt able to produce turning wickets because they have the spinners to exploit them. Jack Leach came to the fore with 65 Championship wickets in 2016, leading to a clamour for him to be selected for England’s Tests in India. He wasn’t. His action was found to be illegal in testing at Loughborough that October.
