Jonathan on his last day at Loganair during the five-minute turnaround at North Ronaldsay on the BN-2 Islander

My last day at Loganair beckoned in late January. As I was starting the day in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, I decided to join the pilot for the early morning round trip to North Ronaldsay, one of six outer isles connected to Kirkwall by the longstanding air service. The word ‘lifeline’ is often overused when describing flights in rural areas, but this route truly is essential to the islanders.
As dawn broke over the Orkneys, the view from the right-hand seat of the Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander was so spectacular that I was heartily glad I’d woken early to take the trip.
