SAS IS planning to reintroduce an Airbus A350-900 into its fleet as demand for widebody capacity increases. The aircraft in question, SE-RSC (c/n 391), was delivered to the airline in March 2020, before being withdrawn from use in August 2022 and stored at Tarbes Lourdes Pyrénées airport. It has since been re-registered as VP-COC, a Cayman Island registration.
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2022, the Scandinavian airline ended several leasing agreements on the type, cutting the number of A350s in the fleet from six to three. This was part of its SAS Forward reorganisation plan, of which fleet restructuring was an integral part. One of its former A350s, SE-RSA (c/n 358), found a new home with China Airlines, while another, SE-RSB (c/n 378), is now flying for Malaysia Airlines.
Meanwhile, the airline has also launched a new flight experience for members of its EuroBonus loyalty programme. Called Destination Unknown, the surprise flight was announced on February 12 and, within minutes, more than 1,000 of its members had signed up. Travellers can redeem 30,000 miles for a seat on the flight departing Copenhagen on April 5 and returning three days later. However, the exact destination will remain a mystery until some point during the flight, although passengers who are lucky enough to bag a ticket will be given guidance from the airline about what to pack for the trip.
