Summer Driving Safety Measures

With the rising temperatures of summer, it’s nice to once again see Canadian RVers embracing the lifestyle and shifting into high gear to enjoy new experiences. In fact, this issue is filled with essential ways to do just that.

But one topic we always like to address is driving and highway safety. Canada has countless, scenic destinations, and although travelling to one is exciting, adhering to traffic laws, road conditions, and following best driving safety practices is important for everyone’s well-being on the road.

One of our features in this issue addresses how to avoid wildlife collisions (see page 40). We emphasize the importance of being alert, having properly working headlights in low light conditions, and adhering to safe speeds in efforts to prevent these types of accidents. But these actions – and more – should be practiced anytime, especially in a large RV or when towing any size of a trailer.

After a long winter and spring, it’s easy to forget the basics of safely driving an RV or towing a trailer at highway speeds and along rural roads. Remembering proper weight capacities and knowing the length and width of your RV or truck/trailer, the vehicle’s braking distance, and allowing enough space between those you share the road with are all essential to know and practice.

Also, be sure that vehicle and trailer lights are functioning properly and all mechanical systems have been serviced and are safe for travel. The weather and road conditions, too, must be closely monitored, and should foul conditions suddenly arise, pull over until you feel confident to continue on your route.

These points just touch the surface of safe driving measures. For more details on all aspects of motor vehicle safety and regulations, be sure to visit Transport Canada at www.tc.canada.ca to ensure a safe and enjoyable RV season.
