Pack the Power for Winter RVing

Short of planning a snowbird destination to a popular southern hotspot, winter is a time when you can hit the road to find new experiences. Setting up camp at ski resorts, on BLM land and in select parks that remain open all year is not as uncommon as you may think.

Although there is some planning involved that we have addressed in previous issues of Snowbirds and RV Travelers and at www.suncruisermedia.com, having the right gear is pertinent for convenience and comfort. Aftermarket manufacturers engineer new products every season and understand the challenges of cold-weather RVing.

To hit a particular point on winter RVing, electricity will likely not be available where you decide to camp. This leaves the aftermarket to explore several power options so you can charge and operate many of your RV’s systems and personal go-to devices.

Lithium-ion house batteries are perhaps the top choice. They are more expensive than their lead-acid counterparts, but they can charge seamlessly in a short amount of time and models are now available that can withstand very cold temperatures - some even below -20°C (-4°F). Portable power stations, too, are widely available. Our editorial team has tested a variety of different models and capacities with great results.

So, for our December/January issue, we address some of the newest choices, which we not only liked using but have relied on while remote camping. Winter RVing has a lot of benefits that draw enthusiasts outdoors every year. It’s a great way to enjoy your favourite activity and spend time with family and friends. Having the ability to properly use RV systems and devices will just make it that much more convenient and fun.
