Home Farmer Magazine June 2017 Edição anterior

The June issue of Home Farmer is now ready to download. Hopefully you will already have done much of your sowing by now, so for many of us it’s just a question of keeping an eye on the plot, although there’s still time to sow a number of items if you use the right ‘early’ varieties. Then it’s just a question of keeping empty spaces filled ‒ or just tidy if you’re not a winter grower. We’ve got lots to inspire in this month’s magazine, with great features on growing broad beans, sweetcorn and carrots, and growing in all different directions to transcend the restrictions on small-space gardeners. We’ve also got informative articles on keeping pigs in woodland, medicating livestock, ducks, and bees, and recipes for wines, ice creams and peas – yes, the humble pea which rarely provides a meal in itself, but raises ever so many otherwise ordinary ones to exceptional levels (yes I am a fan – most risottos would be incomplete without them). We’ve even got a feature on tying knots – a critical but often overlooked skill for any self-respecting self-supporter and gardener; how else do you load a trailer safely or fix up wigwams for plant support? And on a more serious front, we investigate an initiative to bring fresh and much-needed new blood into smallholding with a new scheme from the Ecological Land Co-operative, and the increasing popularity of agroforestry, which could help bridge the increasing gap between those who support a continuation of subsidies simply for land ownership, and the growing calls for support to be tied in to improving the environment. All-in-all, a broad spread of topics that will keep readers both entertained and informed.
