As you can see from Martin Cottam’s design on the cover, 2013 is the centenary of the Incorporated Association of Organists. What initially started out as a small group of like-minded individuals has grown into the worldwide organisation it is today. John Brook formalised the IAO and his version of events, written in 1921, can be found on page 6 – I wish he was still alive as he sounds quite a character! This article also inspired the A3 pull-out as Dr J. Naylor, then organist at York Minster, was the principal guest speaker at the first organists’ convention. Rapidly moving ahead to the present, I went up to Durham to interview the new President-Elect – James Lancelot. Gerdi Troskie also keeps us on topic by introducing three pieces written by IAO past-Presidents.
