Drama and Theatre  |  Autumn 1 21/22
Drama & Theatre Autumn 1 is published as the threat of funding cuts looms over drama education – a matter addressed in both the Editorial and Opinion column of the issue, as well as in the news pages. Meanwhile, however, the sector forges bravely ahead, and this issue includes a special feature on four plays which have been added as new set texts to the Edexcel GCSE specification, written by global majority playwrights.
Two features this issue focus on performing arts responses to the refugee crisis – with coverage of Good Chance Theatre’s The Walk and a Drama Strategy page offering lesson ideas building on Warsan Shire’s poem Home. We also look at how drama gives chances to people, through young people’s charity Total Insight Theatre, women’s theatre charity Clean Break, and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures’ new ‘Cygnet School’.
In the plays section of the magazine, we look closely at Burying your brother in the pavement and Rotterdam, while our Practitioner Focus introduces LUNG Theatre through practical exercises; and as well as introducing Five Great Plays to make your audience laugh, we review a further four play texts, three books, a streamed theatre production, and live and online workshops.
