YouTube’s Restricted Mode meant thousands of LGBT-related videos disappeared from its platform last month. Introduced to protect against adult content, it also censored anything related to gay life, relationships and love. YouTuber RIYADH KHALAF explains what went wrong

IN THE PAST MONTH, YouTube has been at the centre of one of its biggest controversies. Users of the site discovered that selecting “Restricted Mode” while viewing videos meant almost any content mentioning LGBT+ issues essentially disappeared.
The filter was designed to “broadly restrict content across more mature topics”. As you can imagine, people got pretty pissed off, pretty quickly when the mere mention of LGBT+ life, relationships and culture meant that a video was automatically blocked.
