William Rowan and his Steam Railcars
Imagine for a moment that it is late 1879, and that you have just arrived in the little South Australian seaside town of Glenelg, near Adelaide. The railway is the Glenelg and South Coast Tramway, and what you have just seen is a Rowan steam railcar, the first of five such railcars to arrive in the Australian colonies between 1879 and 1885. It was in the 1870s that William developed his designs for steam railcars, envisaging them as being suitable for use on both rural light railways and urban street tramways.
