BRITISH Steel’s new £10 million storage facility for finished rail at its Scunthorpe site is scheduled to be completed this summer.
The purpose-built complex will provide a single, dedicated storage location for rail, which at present is stored at various sites. Designed to supply 56E1 and 60E2 section rail as and when required for Network Rail, when finished, it is expected to be the biggest such facility in the United Kingdom.
Civil engineering work was completed before Christmas, with towers and gantry sections the next to be completed. Hoist and permanent magnet systems, along with other equipment which will be used to lift and load the rails for onward movement by train, is also still to be installed. A total of 11 multi-gantry hoists will be available for train loading.
