Welcome to our July issue! The summer months have finally arrived and it’s a great time of year to check out new bands, artists and live music with so many festivals taking place. The drum scene has been especially busy in recent weeks with the Manchester Drum Show and the World’s Greatest Drummer Event, where our cover star, Steve Gadd, was the special guest.
Steve Gadd surely needs no introduction! He is one of the most respected and influential drummers of all time and this year he celebrated his 70th birthday, with more than 60 of those years spent as a drummer. We felt privileged to speak to him the day before he played at the WGD, where he looked back over his career.
We have another drum legend this month, too – Whitesnake’s Tommy Aldridge gives us an insight into his pioneering double kick drum technique that has made him one of the most in-demand rock drummers of the last 40 years with names like Ozzy Osbourne and Thin Lizzy. Matt Halpern is no stranger to double kick techniques either, as the phenomenally technical drummer for prog-metallers Periphery and a big name on the education/clinic scene. Jack Pollitt gives us the lowdown on his latest West End depping and touring with the soulful groovers, Mamas Gun. Daniel Sadownick, in-demand percussionist from New York, has a new solo album and lets us know about working for the likes of Joe Bonamassa and Taylor Swift. We’ve got a report from Frankfurt’s Musikmesse on the latest products that were revealed, plus a spiral stacker combo competition prize from Zildjian, which is killer!
Mark Richardson (of Skunk Anansie and Feeder fame) is our guest tutor, sharing experience and advice on writing with bands. We also have lots, lots more with the usual news, reviews, tuition and features!
