Stay Alert at the Wheel
We can never report enough about the
importance of highway safety. With all of the
technology and conveniences available to
Canadian drivers - RVers included - serious
auto accidents are still making devastating
headlines throughout the year. As we are
amidst the snowbird season with many
enthusiasts planning a winter destination,
practicing highway safety should always be a
top priority.
In addition to the many highway traffic
laws to abide by while on the road, staying
alert at the wheel and/or taking measures to
avoid driver fatigue - especially while running
a fully loaded RV - is pertinent for everyone’s
safety on the highways and byways.
It’s common to travel long distances in
an RV, yet it often leads to driving during
dark morning hours, at dusk, and well after
night falls, and may cause road weariness to
set in, which is just one more common cause
of accidents and even fatalities on Canadian
roadways.
But preventative measures can be taken.
Sharing the drive with partners and/or
family members, limiting the duration of
time behind the wheel, pulling over at rest
stops every few hours, getting a good night’s
sleep, and taking plenty of time to get to a
destination can all be effective to prevent
driver fatigue.
By practicing a variety of other effective
ways to stay alert at the wheel, taking on long-
distance trips this snowbird season will not
only be more enjoyable but safer as well - no
matter where the road leads.
