Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom  |  August 2014
Our mantra for the issue? Let the light in. From two Victorian kitchen extensions, where shabby units, internal walls and faux chimneys were ripped out to create bright and open living spaces, to a new-build in Norfolk where design-conscious owners created a modern white and graphite scheme, our featured kitchen projects are all about maximising natural light and bringing the outdoors in. Our leading kitchen story, Brilliantly Simple (page 24), features Helen and Tom Carroll’s radical makeover of the lower ground floor of their period house, where they pulled out their dated conservatory and replaced it with an extension running the full width of the house. To brighten this awkward basement space, glass was used liberally, with a sloping roof, circular skylight, sliding full-length doors and a glass-topped dining table included in the scheme. The overall effect? A beautiful living area with a wonderful sense of flow. The same logic is applied in Anna and Michael’s renovation - The Swedish Way (page 44), where internal walls and a utility room came down to make space for a light and airy kitchen. Meanwhile, in our still life edit Botanical Beauty (page 60) we’ve taken the lead from the new biophilia trend and let the garden creep indoors. There’s stylish inspiration for al fresco dining on page 56, flora-themed kitchen accents on page 68 and bathroom lighting on page 92, and continuing our airy and bright theme, turn to page 106 for ideas on creating your perfect bedroom colour scheme in A Blank Canvas. This month, no matter what the weather, summer is beautiful, both inside and out. Enjoy the holidays and enjoy this light and beautiful issue.
