Organists' Review  |  March 2021
I have listened to the carol "Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen" being sung ever since I was a cathedral chorister’s sister (I’m still a sister but my brother no longer sings in a cathedral). Despite me thinking that it is beautiful, I put no more thought into it and therefore was shocked to discover its age; 2021 marks the quincentenary of the composer’s death. Therefore we relished the opportunity to spread more knowledge about Michael Praetorius. Jeffery Kite-Powell has written about Praetorius’s organ music, and Jan Waterfield writes about how today’s musicians are able to keep bringing early music to life.
The cover and pullout move forward in time. Århus Cathedral has a four-manual organ which was beautiful but needed work, a challenge taken up by Marcussen & Søn and relaunched by Thomas Trotter in October.
