Welcome to our March issue! I recently braved the California sunshine (it’s a tough life) to visit NAMM, the gigantic music tradeshow in Anaheim, to bring you news on the latest drum gear releases for 2016. Events like that are the complete antithesis of sitting at my laptop, editing the magazine peacefully and working without many people around – being surrounded by drummers and noise for several days is wonderful, hectic and sometimes exhausting, but it is always fantastic to catch up with people from the industry (including recent interviewee Mikkey Dee and Remo head honcho Remo Belli). Every time, I am reminded how lucky we are to play this instrument and to be so connected to a community of like-minded people.
Paul Bostaph of Slayer takes the cover this month, and rightly so as the metal monarchs have recently released their 12th studio album. We also spent some time talking to Roger Taylor, the ultimate New Romantic rhythm maker, about being back on the road with Duran Duran and those iconic drum parts. Hungary’s Adam Marko is making waves internationally, while Pete Cater explains his unexpected London Drum Show experience and gives advice for up-and-coming drummers in the world of social media.
We also have Caught Live with U2’s Larry Mullen Jr, a report straight from this year’s Young Drummer of the Year final, and Lorne Wheaton (drum tech for Neil Peart and friends) features in this month’s Back Stage Pass. We’ve got a brand new tuition page with Rockschool starting this month too and you can turn to page 20 for your chance to win a new Stagg 18” Sensa Orbis China in our competition. It’s all going on! Enjoy!
