Custom Car  |  Mar-23
Andy Saunders’ latest masterpiece, Deja, graces the cover of Custom Car this month.
Underneath, it’s just a 2.5 Riley. But this magnificent tribute to the golden age of coachbuilding showcases the great man’s genius at its very finest.
Being in the same issue as Deja is a tough call for anyone, but there’s plenty more besides to feast your eyes upon. Grant Kennaird’s F-100 camper, for example, which takes the notion of ‘low’ to new extremes. If there’s a cooler motorhome in existence, we’re yet to see it.
Paul Pope’s old Mk3 Cortina, on the other hand, is a sleeper. It looks a little out of the ordinary, but you’d never guess it was an old strip star taken back to the street… at least not until the loud pedal goes down.
The variety between these three feature cars is mirrored by that of the events in this month’s issue, too. We’ve been to the Mopar Nationals and the Rømø beach race, as well as a trio of club events in the south-west and East Anglia – including a visit to Stonham Barns that brought us face to face with an old favourite from the show scene in the shape of Lemon Squash.
We’ve got a reflective look at the drag racing scene then and now by Keith Lee, too, as well as a refreshed News and Events section and the return, in concentrated form, of the controversial Custom Car Years, looking back at an issue that turned into a Corvette special.
But we know our place in the world. Custom Car this month will forever be The One With Deja. And we’ll take that all day long.
