START SOWING FLOWERS FOR SUMMER COLOUR
Fascinating and ethereal, air plants get their name because they don’t root down into soil but spend their lives hooked into trees, lodged on cliffs or dangling from telegraph wires. Small roots are used purely for anchorage and the plants absorb water and nutrients through modified scales called trichomes covering leaf surfaces. This makes them ideal for people on the move. With no pots of soil to lug around, a collection of air plants is very portable. Air plants belong to Tillandsia, the largest genus in the pineapple family (Bromeliaceae).
