Model Engineer  |  4683
In this issue, Roger Backhouse takes an Engineer’s Day Out at the Queen Street Mill in Burnley to see 300 looms in action, all driven by a 500hp tandem compound steam engine. Luker constructs the cylinders, valves and crossheads for his 5 inch gauge Australian steam locomotive Ballaarat. Jacques Maurel looks at methods of measuring screw threads and offers some gadgetry for making these measurements a little easier. Gerald Martyn concludes his foray into small engines by making a couple of even smaller engines. Pete Targett makes the crankshaft, camshaft and cams for his four-cylinder version of Malcolm Stride’s Bobcat internal combustion engine and makes a decision on cylinder firing order. Adrian Garner continues work on the case for his astronomical bracket clock.
Tony Bird decides that his tram engine Ellie deserves an upgrade both to its boiler and its engine. Roger Froud continues his studies of injectors by experimenting with different designs for the steam cones. Ian Couchman tackles a major part of his Ransomes straw elevator, the trough, and its various fittings. Peter Semour-Howell takes a diversion from the ‘main line’ while he tackles a few odds’n’ends for his 5 inch gauge Flying Scotsman, the hatches, grab rails, lamps and steps.
