Roger Backhouse ponders the workings (or otherwise) of the perpetual motion machine that forms part of the SMEE collection.
James Wells reminisces about the heyday of ‘men in sheds’ in the period immediately following the end of the Second World War.

Tony Bird shows how you can test a small boiler at minimal expense, with the help of your local garden centre.
Having recently completed his own miniature steam hammer, Ray Griffin visits one of the largest full size hammers in the world, at Le Creusot in France.
Martin Ranson constructs a boiler and burner for his 32mm locomotive, ‘FALCOR’.
Stephen Wessel shows how some rather unlikely items can be pressed into use in the manufacture of the induction pipework for his ENV aero engine.

Model Engineer

It is a good magazine. I am old so not to interested in the modern cad/cam. Did the Cad for a living as a manager. I am interested in the old ways of doing model engineering. My dad was into making small 3.5" gauge locos. So I am versed in his ways. As he said you make the side plates with a hack saw, file, surface table & bench drill. No need to mill out anything. What milling you do can be done on the Lathe with a large vertical slide. Bit different to what I see. You need more to teach filing skills much more. Keeps this a cheaper hoby.
