A free plan! Drawings for Metro are being reprinted to coincide with the current serial by Terry Woodward entitled ‘Halstead’ which is based, to some extent, on this design by Martin Evans. (Halstead will be in every alternate issue.)
A mixed bag this issue with some intricate model making in the form of constructing George Punter’s Saunderson & Mills agricultural tractor engine, a marine type vertical engine designed and described by Chris Walter and heavier work by Chris Gunn who is machining the water pump casting for the 6 inch scale Garrett 4CD.
Peter King continues his beginner’s course in achieving the results you seek with your new CNC equipment.
On the cover is a lovely 3 inch scale threshing machine by Ian Couchman. Ian has created his own 3D drawings and has benevolently made them available to anyone who has the software to view them. (See the article for details.) His article describes both the metal and woodworking techniques used to create this lovely model - one which also works in exactly the same way the prototype did.
Inchanga considers compression in a steam cylinder and Journeyman shares some thoughts on the Kermode/Sentinel experimental liquid fuel firing of a steam waggon boiler.
Raymond McMahon struggled to get the E. T. Westbury road roller going and asks - how many others experienced similar problems?

Model Engineer

It is a good magazine. I am old so not to interested in the modern cad/cam. Did the Cad for a living as a manager. I am interested in the old ways of doing model engineering. My dad was into making small 3.5" gauge locos. So I am versed in his ways. As he said you make the side plates with a hack saw, file, surface table & bench drill. No need to mill out anything. What milling you do can be done on the Lathe with a large vertical slide. Bit different to what I see. You need more to teach filing skills much more. Keeps this a cheaper hoby.
