Dolls House World  |  Issue 348
I know many miniaturists who, when they first fall in love with the hobby, start to keep a neat record of their purchases.
They carefully list the maker of every piece they buy, together with the date and price. The latter is the first to go obviously, as the figures start to mount up.
And despite the fact that, as I always maintain, women spend a fraction of the amount on their hobbies that men do, there is still something rather disconcerting about keeping a running total. An inconvenient truth revealed.
Susan Carson followed exactly the same pattern when she started in the hobby. But luckily, although she ‘accidentally’ lost the pricing book early on, her record of makers has remained intact over the years. That’s why, when we take a look around her gorgeous cottage in this issue, she’s able to tell us exactly who made what.
Susan’s cottage, as seen on the front cover, is a good reflection of that other welcome aspect of our hobby — the ability to combine collecting with creating. She made the brickwork out of egg boxes, fashioned the curtains and blinds, and even discovered a hidden talent for painting pet portraits.
Personally, I’m still waiting to discover my hidden talent. Now that is an inconvenient truth.
Enjoy the issue.
