Classic Plant & Machinery  |  Plant & Machinery September 2013
It only seems like a fortnight ago that we turned the central heating off, now we are complaining about the soaring temperatures. Stories of melting motorways and air-conditioning systems buckling under the strain have replaced tales of snow drifts and burst pipes. As a nation, we British love a good moan about the weather. We never seem to find the right balance. Other countries appear to handle extreme conditions far better – either by having a kip during the mid-day heat or buying more snow ploughs. Never mind though, the run-up to Christmas starts soon and then complaints about fuel prices and black ice can start again. On the plus side, many of the shows and working displays which were hit by poor weather in recent years should enjoy better fortune. This summer I’m hoping to once again take my children to the naval warfare display in Scarborough. For those who don’t know, this involves model boats manned by council workers staging a mock sea battle on a park lake. It’s what could be termed ‘traditional fun’. My kids love it, which in these days of computer games and special effects, is something of an achievement. They still laugh at the organist's joke
about Rotherham and al fresco dining, even at the fifth time of hearing. I won't spoil the punchline for you. This is actually my final first word. I’m moving on to be managing editor of Classic Plant & Machinery and sister title, Old Tractor, and next month’s offering will be written by Peter Love. He is one of the best informed people in the business and I am sure he needs no introduction to anyone with an interest in the plant and machinery world.
