On the way into work this morning, I was listening to=Chris Evans on Radio 2 – normally I’m a committed Radio 4 listener in the mornings, but on this occasion the car I was using was already tuned to Radio 2, and
before I could retune it I heard they were talking about classic cars...
Anyway, it emerged that Chris Evans is promoting a ‘drive your classic car day’ in aid of Children in Need. The impression given was that it was an idea he’d just had, but knowing how these things really work I’m sure there must have been some pre-planning. The initial plan was for this to take place on Friday, March 28, but following listener feedback this was amended to Friday, April 4 – i.e. this coming Friday – on the basis that many owners tax their classics from April to September. I’m not really sure what to think about this. On the positive side, it’s extra publicity for classic cars and classic car ownership, plus an opportunity to use our cars to raise money for a good cause. I’m also all for any chance to drive old cars, and I certainly intend to use either my Rover P5 or my Hillman Minx that day – assuming they come out of storage without problems.
However this proposal has been criticised by some on the basis that it could detract from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Club’s established Drive It Day, which takes place just over three weeks later. From a participation point of view, I don’t think it will affect things – I really can’t see anyone thinking ‘I drove my classic to work already so
I won’t use it for Drive It Day’. Rather, it will be seen as an extra excuse to do something that we enjoy doing anyway.
