Camping  |  May
For me the West Country will always mean long, hot summer holidays by the sea. When I was young we spent many a lazy day on Cornwall’s beaches, doing very little apart from digging huge holes in the sand and occasionally filling them with sea water. We’d cool off with a Raspberry Mivvi or by racing into the Atlantic and throwing ourselves into the rolling waves. More than 35 years later, I’d struggle to think of a better way to spend a sunny day.
Millions of visitors flock to Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset every summer to enjoy the sea and the sand, the surfing, the coastal walks, the rugged moors, the picturesque villages and the great food.
There are campsites everywhere – from tiny corners of muddy grass at the back of country pubs to massive holiday parks with every facility you can possibly imagine. You’ll find a selection of our favourites in this West Country special issue. Whatever your camping needs you’ll find a site that meets them. You’ll also need to think about what you want to do on your holiday and our writers have come up with some wonderful West Country activities, whatever the weather.
Add in a feed from a celebrity chef like Jamie Oliver or Rick Stein or simply pick up a local pasty or enjoy a cream tea and you’ll see why the West Country is still Britain’s most popular holiday region.
Go west, you won’t regret it!
