Over the years countless people have enjoyed days out at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire. As well as having a vast amount of static aircraft on display, the sight of classic types in the skies above
this former fighter station can still be seen regularly. While it is difficult to believe that the UK air show season is already nearing its close, Duxford will be rounding off its year of flying displays with a very notable event. On Sunday October 13, the Autumn Air Show will mark the 40th anniversary of flying events at Duxford, the first having taken place in October 1973. The spotlight will be thrown on the historic aeroplanes that are operated by flying partners based at the museum, and the organisers also hope to showcase some of the types that flew at Duxford’s very first air show. The recent Duxford Air Show over the weekend of September 7-8 certainly left me eager to see just what the flying programme will include for the October event. The sight of six Supermarine Spitfi res tail-chasing around the skies over Duxford was a highlight for me, and I look forward to hopefully
seeing more of the same soon. I was recently invited to see the amazing progress being made by the Aircraft Restoration Company to an old Duxford air show favourite, Bristol Blenheim G-BPIV. I am sure you will be keen to learn at what an advanced stage of its rebuild this wonderful aircraft is, and when this year’s season is over we will hopefully have the unique sight of the shape of a Blenheim Mk I to begin looking forward to for next year!
