LandLove Magazine  |  January-February 2014
The one thing you can be certain of at this time of year is that it’s going to be cold outside. Now you can either curl up in front of a roaring fire or you can wrap up warm, head outdoors and embrace the winter weather. For those of you who to prefer to stay toasty warm indoors we’ve got lots of delicious comfort food recipes, from tasty swede dishes (p.52) and an array of hearty roulades (p.46) to some mouth-watering proper puds (p.54), you’re sure to find something to warm the cockles of your heart. If it’s too chilly for you to venture out into the garden, then stay inside and try your hand at our simple craft projects on pages 66 and 68 or start sowing seeds on your windowsill. Find out how to get a head start on page 20. If your garden is looking a tad grey and bare right now, then think about adding some plants to give it a splash of colour next winter. On page 16 we take a look at beautiful viburnums which bloom early in the year, while on page 28 you can discover the delicate beauty that hellebores bring to your home and garden in the depths of winter. January and February can be a tough period for our garden visitors, so in this issue we show you how to build nest boxes for the birds (p.42), while on page 36 we take a look at how our native hedgerows provide valuable shelter and food for Britain’s wildlife. If you’re feeling brave enough to head outdoors over the coming weeks then why not visit one of the mysterious sacred sites dotted around the UK – we’ve got 10 to choose from on page 108. If you live in the north of the country you may spot a red squirrel on your winter walks – find out more about how you can help these endangered little creatures on page 90. You may not be lucky enough to spot red squirrels if you live in the West Country, but you will be able to see Exmoor ponies braving the elements on the moors. We take a closer look at this hardy breed on page 102. I wish you a safe and enjoyable start to the new year and will see you in Spring.
