Dolls House World  |  Issue 372
Famous authors found their imagination and skills put to the test when asked to create new books for Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House.
The library, pictured on this month’s front cover, was put together a hundred years ago, but now has some modern additions. We hear from many of the authors about how they stepped up to the mini challenge. Sebastian Faulks said his hand-writing had never been under such pressure and many recognised the intrinsic appeal of the small scale.
It could have been one of us talking when Sir Ben Okri said: “There is something magical about working with the very small.”
We hope you find a sprinkling of that magic within this issue, as we bring you some stunning houses, beautiful room boxes and inspiring projects. We hear how Joan rescued a sad house at a car boot sale, which turned out to be just the tonic she needed to spark her creative juices. Linda tells us why she and her 80-year-old father decided to build a replica of their ancestral home together, and Kathleen designs the ideal retro kitchen room box with the help of her husband and 3D printing.
As Sir Ben Okri said, after finishing his royal book commission: “The doll’s house is a mysterious kingdom that once encountered starts a secret yearning to dwell there.” Well put Sir Ben.
