Classic Pop Presents  |  The Human League
Surfacing from Sheffield’s underground scene in the late-70s, The Human League made their mark early on with experimental sets of forward-facing electronica that sounded like little else around at the time. Artistic differences led to a line-up change, with singer Phil Oakey famously recruiting two new female members from a nightclub dancefloor in support of a newly streamlined synth-pop sound that would quickly take them into the charts.
Inside, we follow the entire story of the band from formation through to the present day. We chat to early members Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory about those pioneering years, as well as sitting down with Ian Burden and Jo Callis, who pick up the story, having joined the ranks for the band’s ascent to chart glory with their pop classic ‘Dare’. Elsewhere, production duos Jimmy Jams and Terry Lewis, and I Monster shed light on working with the band in the studio.
Every one of the group's albums are revisited and reviewed, including remix album Love And Dancing, plus we explore Phil Oakey’s celebrated team-up with Giorgio Moroder alongside his other wide-reaching extra-curricular activities. Lastly, there’s a look at the band’s live shows over the years, a detailed examination of their sleeve art, and the usual Top 40 rundown!
