Railnews  |  September 2015
Further delays to Network Rail projects make our lead this month, accompanied by a personal view of Network Rail's problems from transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin. Speaking exclusively to Railnews, the transport secretary is taking a philosophical stance -- read the September issue to find out why.
In other news, a major ambition to create 30,000 new apprenticeships in the transport sector over the life of this Parliament has been unveiled, which will include thousands of young entrants to the railway industry over the next four years or so.
The collision between two engineering trains in south west Scotland which closed the railway near Dumfries during the first half of August is the subject of an inquiry by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, while preparations for the opening of the newly-modernised Birmingham New Street station in September are on final countdown.
Infrastructure improvements are also discussed in this month's Guest Opinion, in which GB Railfreight managing director John Smith makes an urgent case for upgrades so that the growth in railfreight can be accommodated. And still on the subject of infrastructure, a new station near Cambridge has received planning permission but even Railnews cannot yet report the name of the station, which will serve the city's Science Park complex. It has yet to be decided.
