Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom  |  April 2014
I have discovered the nesting instinct is not just an old wives' tale. With not long to go before I have my next baby, I find myself with a sudden and completely overwhelming urgency to get the house entirely organised. The key, I’ve discovered, to making modern life run a bit more smoothly is efficient storage. Our feature on page 68, Store Guide, outlines a number of options to solve your kitchen storage dilemmas. It’s important not to just consider the things that would be in your dream room in an ideal scenario, but remember all the annoying items – post,
letters and bills that all stack up on the dresser creating a mess. If you accept that these are part of modern life and create special places to store them out of sight you’ll be able to keep your new room looking at its best at all times. Utilising available space ergonomically can make your home run much more smoothly. On a rather larger scale, another thread running through this issue is architecture. Our main kitchen case study stories, starting on page 28, have all embraced the knowledge and skill of architects to create their new project. The kitchen being far more than the style of units used to create and adorn it, but the fabric of the very house itself. We have three distinct architectural styles showcased to inspire you. I like them all - from the urban side return with exposed brick and AGA in Hampstead to the super contemporary openplanned glass extension in Sussex (Softly Softly, page 41) to an elegant listed Georgian property, requiring a particularly sympathetic eye (Country In The City, page 24). They are all so different, but work in harmony with the internal fittings to create rooms that achieve both beauty and total practicality – entirely transforming the properties in each instance. Each owner found their own architect and their own kitchen designer to come together to create their dream room. Look out next month for more stunning architect designed kitchen and bathroom spaces. Enjoy!
