Your Dog  |  Your Dog Magazine June 2020
At the time of writing, we are still doing our best to cope with the restrictions and challenges that the coronavirus lockdown brings.
While walking our dogs has become the highlight of the day for many of us, particularly when we have easy access to the countryside, for others it’s more problematic. I’ve had numerous emails from readers who live in flats or urban areas for whom it’s not that straightforward. So, this month we’ve been focusing on activities you can enjoy with your dog at home — either in the house or the garden, or both. Not only will these games and exercises provide a bit of light relief — as well as something to focus on — they are all mentally and physically stimulating for your dog, and will still be worth keeping in your repertoire once restrictions have been lifted.
So, try your hand (and paw) at target stick training, treasure hunting, hide-and-seek, and more. And if, like me, you have a dog who hates having his nails clipped, and will hide behind the sofa at the sight of the nail clippers, check out Toni Shelbourne’s feature on how to teach your dog to relax, and prevent paw handling becoming a battle. All it takes is a little patience, consistency, and time — and we’ve all got plenty of that!
Until next month, stay safe, and cherish your pets — they really help to keep us going in these troubled times.
