FRANKIE FOIL O'BRIEN IN DERBY
So many horses are still right in the mix for this year’s Investec Derby that you couldn’t blame the executive for deciding to divide the great old race for the first time in its history. Aidan O’Brien alone could field enough runners to make it a competitive Classic. He has sent contenders to just about every Derby trial this spring on both sides of the Irish Sea. Several have won, others have run well in defeat and he might just have saved the best for last as The Gurkha was mightily impressive in landing the French 2,000 Guineas on May 15 with an ease that surprised and delighted his trainer. O’Brien recently trained his 250th Group 1 winner which is a truly astonishing achievement when you consider that he
has been training at Ballydoyle for only twenty years. Five have come in the Derby at Epsom.
