Training your dog doesn’t need to be complicated. That’s the message from top trainer and behaviourist Jackie Drakeford in our lead feature this month — ’10 ways to make training easier’ (page 10).
When it comes to instigating a training plan for your dog, it makes sense to analyse exactly what you want from him, and whether some of the exercises commonly taught are really that relevant for your pet and his lifestyle.
However your training is going, I think you’ll agree that Jackie’s article offers real food for thought, and you may find yourself questioning the need for some of the techniques you currently use. I know I have!
This month we’re also taking a closer look at the sport of working trials. It’s not the best known canine activity, but with its focus on nosework, agility, and control, it is well worth considering if you’ve got an athletic dog. Working trials is physically and mentally challenging for both of you, and offers the opportunity to strengthen your relationship with your dog. Find out more on page 46.
We’ve also got an update this issue on the situation in Ukraine and the many animal rescuers who are battling to save and care for abandoned pets. Check it out on page 44.
Finally, don’t miss out on all the other, must-read features in May’s Your Dog — from wonderful Crufts 2023 memories, and fabulous walks to enjoy with your dog in The Lake District (page 32), to tips and advice on grooming and coat care this summer, now that the weather’s getting better.
