Confident owners make confident dogs, but at a time when we’re all still feeling a little uncertain about the new, post-lockdown world, that’s easier said than done.

Confidence isn’t a given; we have to work at it, so top trainer and behaviourist Jackie Drakeford’s feature on ‘How to be a more confident dog owner’ makes timely reading, and it’s packed with
tips and advice on how you can build your confidence and help your dog to feel safe.

There’s no doubt that the past year has been tough for the owners of reactive pets, and coping with a barking, snapping dog can be challenging. Our new series ‘Reactive to responsive’ (page 18) examines the causes of reactivity, and will help you to manage your dog’s behaviour and understand the emotions that underpin
his reactions.

Our canine hero of the issue this month has to be black Labrador Oliver — a justice facility dog and the first of his kind in the UK. This amazing canine works within the criminal justice system, providing calmness and companionship to vulnerable witnesses and victims during procedures such as police interviews — just another example of dogs as a power for good.
