Australian director Baz Luhrmann follows up his 2022 cinema spectacular Elvis with his first turn as a documentary maker for EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert. In this issue, we take an in-depth look at the making of this latest creation, an unmissable film that takes us behind the scenes of Elvis’s US tour Las Vegas tenure, via never-before-seen footage and live recordings – fascinating insight comes from esteemed members of the Elvis Presley Fan Club.
Inside, we also the 70th anniversary of rock’n’roll’s national anthem, Blue Suede Shoes, with an examination of how “King Of Rockabilly” Carl Perkins developed his ground-breaking sound from a young teenager through to the records’ eventual release on Sun Records. It’s also 85 years since teen sensation Ritchie Valens was born, so we felt it timely to revisit his incendiary debut LP too, a timeless record that broke down racial barriers and threw open the doors for Chicano rock’n’roll.
When Elvis first arrived, he was followed by plenty of female rock’n’rollers, some of whom were dubbed the “Female Elvis” – in this edition we survey the best of the contenders from Janis Martin and Jean Chapel to Alis Lesley and Sparkle Moore. Add detailed features on Jackie Wilson, doo-wop stars The Clovers and The Dominoes, Joe Clay’s rockin’ perennial Duck Tail, plus Richard Hawley discussing his latest jukebox compilation and more, and you’re in for a treat!
Enjoy the issue.
