Railnews  |  March 2014
The twists and turns in the HS2 saga continue to dominate railway industry news, and our lead provides an update and also looks ahead to David Higgins’ keynote report, which is to be published next Monday.
Also in the March edition, we report Network Rail’s latest apology for level crossing casualties and that Bombardier in Derby has won the contract to build rolling stock for Crossrail.
The bad weather in February caused major disruption on some rail routes and we provide the details, including the latest on the reopening of the severed Great Western line at Dawlish, in a special news feature. Meanwhile, Network Rail’s Robin Gisby provides an exclusive assessment of the weather situation for Railnews in this month’s Guest Opinion.
The new trains for Thameslink were unveiled earlier in the year, and their spartan nature has attracted critical comment. We examine the passenger environment on board trains, past, present and future, in our feature ‘Are you sitting comfortably?’
In other news, we report how Wales is moving towards full devolution as far as the next passenger franchise is concerned, and why there have been protests at a planned move of diesel units from First TransPennine Express to Chiltern Railways.
All this, and much more, is in Railnews for March.
