WHEN SLIPKNOT came hurtling out of the cornfields of Iowa in the late 90s, spitting and snarling and huffing dead crows, nobody knew what the hell to make of them, mainly because there’d been nothing like them before. There was the blitzkrieg of noise they made, the lunatic-asylum-escapees image, the psychopathic live show that took sonic and physical violence to new levels, the ever-growing following of ‘maggots’ they drew in along the way. Twenty years on, and Slipknot have become the greatest metal band of the modern age. Their landmark debut album, released in the feverish summer of 1999, ushered in the new millennium six months early. Each subsequent release only strengthened their position at the top of the metal heap. The volatility for which they became famous wasn’t a pose – albums have been punctuated by bust-ups and meltdowns. The death in 2010 of founding bassist Paul Gray was the kind of tragedy that no band should have to endure. Three years later, the departure of original drummer Joey Jordison – who passed away in 2021 – proved yet another tipping point. But Slipknot thrive on chaos, and every time they have emerged stronger. Metal Hammer has been there from the very beginning, and this special-edition magazine collates the very best of that coverage – from reporting on the band’s emergence in the late 90s, to charting the sky-scraping highs and gut-punching lows of their career, and following their continued domination today. Inside, you’ll find exclusive interviews with all the key bandmembers, the inside story of their landmark albums, and access-all-areas reports from classic live shows – the complete, maggot-friendly history of the band. So turn up We Are Not Your Kind and enjoy…
