DIVISION ONE

THORNHILL TROJANS, who are bottom of the section and without a win (other than a triumph over Featherstone, which was expunged when the Lions withdrew from the NCL) came very close to pulling off the upset of the season.

The Trojans lost 32-30 to leaders WEST BOWLING, who ultimately owed their victory to a penalty-goal two minutes from time by Brad Wright.

The Leeds coach who never lost a final
Last week Syd Hynes discussed his Leeds career up to the Challenge Cup Final of 1971. His greatest moment in the game had come a year earlier when he was part of the last Great Britain team to win the Ashes. Back home, the club continued to be a major force. Hynes became coach in 1975, winning all the finals he steered them to, including at Wembley in 1977 and 1978
