Summer is finally on its way and there’s no better excuse to get out in the garden. In this issue we’ve got lots to inspire you to get growing. We take a look at traditional lupins on page 26, and we’ve got some clever ideas on page 34 for using and making rustic planters to give your garden country cottage appeal. On page 18 you’ll find our easy-to-use guide to planning and planting a herb garden that’s pretty to look at as well as being jam-packed with tasty plants. And for those of you who like foraging, we’ve got some delicious recipes on page 50 using wild herbs, while on page 64 we’ve got some tasty suggestions for cooking with woodruff. We also catch up with herb queen Jekka McVicar on page 80 and pick up some tips on the best ways to pick and store medicinal herbs. In this issue we meet Kentish sheep farmers Kristina and Paul Boulden who are not just keeping their family traditions alive but are cleverly diversifying to move them into the 21st century (p.100). 11th-12th May sees National Mills Weekend where you can celebrate our milling heritage by visiting mills across the country. On page 94 we visit Dorset miller Michael Stoate who is ensuring a bright future for his 200-year-old family firm. Keeping it in the family is close to Roger Muir’s heart too, he tells us how his father Ken Muir built his famous strawberry business and shares his growing tips with us (p.40). Now the warmer weather is here our thoughts turn to where to go on holiday. We head to the Channel Island of Guernsey and discover just what it has to offer visitors. From sandy beaches to dramatic cliffs, winding country lanes to a bustling port, you’ll be amazed to read just how much there is to see and do on the island’s 24 square miles (p.116). Finally, if you’re looking for inspiration for where to go for a grand day out when the sun is shining, take a look at our inspiring Out and About feature on page 68 where you’ll find a host of fascinating events happening across the country.
