So what makes a 'special one'?
Well, they don't necessarily have to be massive, although obviously that helps! And they don't have to be caught from an iconic water either; the humble canal or town park can contain some very special ones. To me it’s more of a feeling that you get… Take a look at this month’s cover; it’s Dave Little with a Longreach common that he caught recently, which has been on the missing list for years. Dave put in a dedicated campaign on a water full of problems: weed, mosquitoes, low stock and real hard graft, and as you can see from his face and pumped-up body, all Dave wanted to do when he lifted this 40-plus beast up to the camera was scream out to the heavens, “Yessss!” Now that is the feeling you get when you catch a 'special one'. Dave's article on Longreach contains a few special ones.
Articles on venues like this are as rare as the captures themselves; they usually involve a decade of dedication at least, and this month’s piece is all that and more. This month I have dedicated the whole magazine to these special carp, and there is a 16-page photo feature with 100 fish, which in my opinion fit that category, all caught within the last few months. Of course I could have put double the amount in, but then we would have a photo album rather than a magazine.
