The backpack might inspire us to head further afield, giving us precious time to nurture our wellbeing and mental health. And there’s more to it than even that. Sometimes the gear we choose adds up to more than the sum of its parts: in recent months, retailers have felt the pinch along with the rest of us, and none more so than the tiny start-ups, the people who painstakingly design, create and package up beautiful bits of kit from their kitchen tables because of their passion for running and for enabling women to run. If we can, these are the people we should be supporting right now. And then there are the people willing us all to do what we can to protect our environment; they recycle our clothing, and use sustainable fabrics to produce long-lasting kit. These are just a few small reasons why we celebrate the best running gear every year. Also in this issue, we speak to the inspirational Katie Piper on how running has been an essential tool in her journey to recovery, we have a training plan to get you back on track if you don’t have a race to aim for (yet), and we consider all the ways running greener can benefit us and our environment: from the kit we wear, to the paths we choose to run on, every step we take can have a positive impact on our world.
