ALONSO'S AMERICAN DREAM
Fernando Alonso will begin to actively chase a race seat in the Le Mans twenty four hours later this year as part of his quest to win the Triple Crown of world motorsport. The Spanish hero confirmed last week that he will make his debut in this year’s Indianapolis five hundred showpiece, as part of a sidedeal with McLaren-Honda. Alonso will race a McLaren entered Dallara DW12 with a 2.2-litre Honda engine. Andretti Autosport, which won the race last year with the same chassis engine combination, will tend Alonso’s car on McLaren’s behalf. The deal represents McLaren’s first entry at Indy for thirty eight years, with the Woking firm’s last Andretti-Honda will run star victory at the event coming back in 1976, when Johnny Rutherford won. McLaren has won the race three times in total, with one win coming from Mark Donohue in a Penske-run chassis in 1972.
