Ants on the attack

Here, a colony of ants swarms an unlucky hornet. Officially, they’re of the species Liometopum microcephalum, but are more generally referred to as velvety tree ants. This is due to their soft abdomens and because they nest in hollow areas of live trees, explains Dr Douglas Booher, an ant expert at Yale University.
