Keep calm and carry on: that might have been our motto in the World War II years, which we revisit through articles, letters and reports from our historical archive. It’s moving that many shows donated their full takings to the Red Cross: a vivid example of the fancy looking outwards, to our wider community. Today, on the eve of the 2022 National Exhibition, we focus on readying birds for exhibition – finches, canaries, budgies – yet always with an eye first to their welfare, with some breeds still moulting out. In total contrast we meet the slightly spooky thick-knee family of wading birds, as well as a rare pheasant that only aviculturists can now save.
