In recent months there have
been rumours going around
relating to preservation clubs on
the brink of having to disband
due primarily to the reluctance
of members willing to take-on
important committee positions as
they become vacant. These positions,
Secretary, Treasurer etc, are of the
utmost importance and must be
filled if a club is not to fall foul of the
legal requirements set when a club
takes on a Limited Company status
under the Companies Act to protect
its members from financial liability
if extreme difficulties arise.
With this in mind it was very pleasing
to receive an email from Irish reader
Peter Miller stating that the “South East
Stationary Engine Club”, formed in
2013 by Eamonn Benson and Graham
Carthy, is doing well and membership is
better than first expected, and continues
to grow. In fact an article by Peter on the
club’s progress will be featured in the
next issue.
Returning to the problem of non-filled
committee places, I think that we should
all take stock of things and ask ourselves
one or two questions. For example; if
you belong to a club, and thousands of
you do if the number of entries in the
“Register of Stationary Engine Clubs”
is anything to go by, what effect would
the demise of your club have on you
personally?
