Welcome to our October issue, which means we are just one month away from our London Drum Show Special and getting closer to the show itself – I hope you’ve got your tickets!
We have some cracking features in this issue to keep you occupied until the show, though – Tom Meadows is the powerhouse on the kit for pop queen Kylie, who he has worked with for the last five years. He lets us in on working life with an icon, his electronic set-up and the freelance worries that never go away.
Alicia Warrington plays for Kate Nash now, but she first cut her teeth on the Kelly Osbourne gig and faced adversity to get where she is today. Matt Skelton, drummer for the Grammy-nominated John Wilson Orchestra, talks us through his vintage set-ups and love of old sounds. Get ready for some serious rock, too – Glen Sobel hits us hard with tales of life with Alice Cooper.
We have reviews from two recent drum-heavy events – the RCM’s Festival of Percussion, which featured Jojo Mayer and Ralph Salmins, and a round up from this year’s Montreal Jazz Festival.
As always, our tuition section is bursting with educational goodies. We welcome Will Fry who’s kicking off a new series on percussion instruments with a look at the shekere, while Mark Richardson’s guest tuition page on touring is a must-read, with powerful and personal advice from his time on the road.
And finally, we pay tribute to Vic Firth, who the drum community is still coming to terms with losing – his legacy as a player, educator and businessman is in place and he is remembered fondly in our feature. This one’s for you, Vic.
