Bass Player UK  |  February 2016
Cast your mind back to the dawn of time(around 1978 will do it) and you will recall that heavy metal was not known for pinpoint accuracy on the bass guitar. Loud and angry it may have been, but playing approximately in time with the rest of the band was more or less all the headbanging bassist was required to do.
All that changed a few years later when a new wave of superaccurate, super-precise bass players stepped up to the plate, with the fearsomely talented David Ellefson of Megadeth at the vanguard. Thirty years and change later and Ellefson is still delivering the goods with a level of power and definition that defies description. Add interviews with funk and jazz masters Norm Stockton and Federico Malaman and rockers Chris Childs and Jim Rodford, as well as a chat with session legend Mo Foster, a visit to Sims Custom Shop and a salute to the late Phil Lynott, and you’ve truly got an issue to savour.
We’re also immensely excited about the line-up for the London Bass Guitar Show, set for 12 and 13 March. Did you see Robert Trujillo of Metallica, sometime Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook, Jools Holland’s bass player Dave Swift and Neil Fairclough of Queen on the cover?
Olympia London will be shaking to its foundations when that lot take the stage alongside Rhino Edwards of Status Quo and the mighty Michael Manring – so don’t miss out. See you there for the bass event of the decade!
