In this issue we’re celebrating the immense talent of a whole range of bass players and the essentialness (is that a word?) of some mighty tasty gear. We kick off with Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers, who is an example to us all of how to be a truly amazing musician while letting your music – and not a media soundbite – do the talking. Then we doff the hat to the much-missed jazz legend Charles Mingus, who began jamming in the sky 35 years ago this month, before moving on to Manchester’s finest ever bassist (Disagree? Let’s hear your choice) Peter Hook, he of Joy Division and New Order. After that, we take time out with Guns N’Roses’ Tommy Stinson and session/stage stalwart Phil Mann, whose new book you can nab in this month’s competition.
